Henry Croasdell's Trades with Clement Taylor

Clement Taylor (1688-1742) was a man poised between the old life of the seventeenth century and the new one of the later eighteenth century, the commercial and industrial world of which we are heirs. He combined interests in farming, commerce and public office. Clement's grandfather was illiterate but had begun to amass the wealth which made his grandson a gentleman. Clement Taylor's account book contains information about a great variety of personal and local affairs in southern Lakeland between 1712 and 1756, including the building of Finsthwaite church. The volume also contains a lengthy biographical index of some 150 people in Clement's 'circle'
