Edward Charles Croasdell was born on 31st January 1867 at 1 Upper Jackson Street in Hulme, Manchester, the eldest son of Edward Simpson Croasdell, described as an Estate Agent on his son's birth certificate, and Eliza Turner. The family were at the same address in the 1871 census but 10 years later they had moved to 61 Embden Street to live with, or possibly just to visit, Eliza's mother, although Edward senior was not with them and his whereabouts hasn't been traced.
