This is the last Will and Testament of me
James Croasdell
of Hawkshead in the County of Lancaster I appoint James Roper Robinson of Ulverston
in the County of Lancaster Printer and my son Samuel Thomas Croasdell to be the executors and
trustees of my will and they or the survivor of them or the executors or administrators of the
survivor or other the trustees or trustee for the time being hereof are hereinafter called the trustees or trustee
And I bequeath to each of them if he shall accept the office of trustee and executor the sum of ten pounds
free of legacy duty I bequeath all my wearing apparel to my son Henry Croasdell I bequeath
the portraits of myself and my late wife to my son Samuel Thomas Croasdell I bequeath
my large Oak Kitchen table to my son Henry Croasdell and I bequeath my glass book case and drawers
in Mahogany to my son John Croasdell and I bequeath the portrait of the prize Bull and the
portrait of my late son James to my grand daughter Hannah Croasdell I declare that the
residue of the furniture in my house is the property of my present wife Susannah Croasdell
I devise and bequeath all the real and personal estate (not hereinbefore specifically bequeathed)
to which at my death I shall be beneficially entitled or of which I shall have power to dispose
beneficially by will for any purpose I may think proper unto the trustees hereinbefore named
absolutely Upon trust to sell the said real estate (including chattels real) and call in sell and
convert into money such part of my personal estate as shall not consist of money And I direct the
trustees or trustee out of the money to arise from the sale and conversion of my said real and personal
estate to pay my personal and testamentary expenses debts and the legacies bequeathed hereby or
by any codicil hereto and to stand possessed of the residue of the said moneys Upon trust as to the sum
of five hundred pounds to invest the same in their or his names or name in any of the securities
hereinafter authorised and to stand possessed thereof and the annual income thereof Upon trust
to pay the said income to my wife Susannah Croasdell during her widowhood and as to
the residue of the said moneys and also (subject as aforesaid) as to the said sum of five hundred
pounds and the investments representing the same (hereinafter called the residuary trust funds)
In trust in equal shares for my children Samuel Thomas Croasdell John Croasdell
Henry Croasdell and Jane Riley and my grandchild Hannah Croasdell the child of my
deceased son James Croasdell And I devise that the trustees or trustee shall retain the share
original and accruing of the said Hannah Croasdell and invest the same in their or his names
or name in any of the securities hereinafter authorised And to stand possessed thereof and the
annual income thereof Upon trust to pay or apply the income thereof in and towards the
maintenance education and advancement in the world or otherwise for the benefit of the said Hannah
Croasdell until she shall attain the age of twenty one years or marry under that age with the
approval of the trustees or trustee And on the happening of either of such events I direct the trustees
or trustee to stand possessed of the said share and the investments representing the same and the
income thereof In trust for the said Hannah Croasdell absolutely And in case the said
Hannah Croasdell shall die prior to attaining the age of twenty one years and without having
been married with such approval as aforesaid I direct that the said share and the investments
representing the same shall fall into and form part of the residuary trust funds and be held and
paid or applied accordingly Provided always that if any of my said children Samuel Thomas
Croasdell John Croasdell Henry Croasdell and Jane Riley and my said Grandchild
Hannah Croasdell shall die in my lifetime leaving a child or children who shall survive me
and being a son or sons shall attain the age of twenty one years or being a daughter or daughters
shall attain that age or marry then and in every such case the last mentioned child or children
shall take (and if more than one equally between them) the share original and accruing which his
her or their parent would have taken of and in the residuary trust funds if such parent had
survived me and as to the share of the said Hannah Croasdell as if the said Hannah Croasdell had
attained the age of twenty one years or married under that age with such approval as aforesaid
but in case any of them the said Samuel Thomas Croasdell John Croasdell Henry Croasdell
Jane Riley and Hannah Croasdell shall die in my lifetime without leaving issue living at
my death the share or shares of him her or them so dying as last aforesaid shall fall into and
form part of the residuary trust funds and be held and paid or applied accordingly I direct
that all moneys liable to be invested under this my will may be invested in or upon any stocks
funds or securities of or guaranteed by the government of the United Kingdom or India or in
the stock of the Bank of England or on real securities in England or Wales in or upon the
stocks funds shares or securities of any Company or Corporation carrying on business or constituted
for any purpose in the United Kingdom with power for the trustees or trustee at discretion to vary such
investments for others of a like nature And Whereas under or by virtue of a Bond or guarantee entered into
by me jointly with my son Joseph Septimus Croasdell with Mr Isaac Sim of Bootle in the
County of Cumberland for the benefit of the said Joseph Septimus Croasdell I or my estate may
become liable to pay the sum of three hundred pounds And I am also bound with my said son
Joseph Septimus Croasdell for the payment of the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds to my
said son Samuel Thomas Croasdell I hereby declare that if at any time hereafter I or after
my decease my executors are called upon in pursuance of such bonds or guarantees to pay the
said sums of three hundred pounds and two hundred and fifty pounds or either of them or
any part thereof that my said son Joseph Septimus Croasdell shall not be called upon to pay the
same or any portion thereof to my estate as I acknowledge the said liabilities are my own
sole debts In Witness whereof I the said James Croasdell the testator have to this my will
contained in this and the two preceding sheets of paper set my hand this twenty eighth day of
September one thousand eight hundred and eighty nine

same time who in his presence and in the presence of each James Croasdell
other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses

Proved at Lancaster the fifteenth day of January 1891 by the
oath of Samuel Thomas Croasdell Son of the deceased one of
the executors named in the will to whom administration was granted
Power reserved of making the like grant to James Roper Robinson
the other executor named in the said will
The testator James Croasdell was late of Hawkshead in the County of
Lancaster Gentleman and died on the eighth day of December 1890 at
Hawkshead aforesaid
