CROASDELL FAMILY - POTTED HISTORIES - BRANCHES
Joseph Croasdell and Sarah Agnes Ainsworth
Joseph Croasdell 1854 - 1905 was the second child and second son of Henry Croasdell and Hannah Silver. He was born in the few years his parents were in Liverpool and was baptised at St Peter's church there on 10 September 1854 when the family were living at Sefton Street and Henry was described as a Sawyer. There is no record of his birth in the General Registration records but this is not unusual for the period and for city life. Three years later the family was back in Furness and in 1861 Joseph and his three brothers were living at 253 Main Street, Dalton in Furness. Sometime in the next 10 years Joseph began his lifetime's career as a seafarer
On 16 April 1879 Joseph married Sarah Agnes Ainsworth at St George's Church, Barrow in Furness. At the time he was a mariner on the ship "Emma" which was berthed in Devonshire Dock. Sarah was born about 1859 in Barrow and her father, John Ainsworth, was also a mariner. In the early years of their marriage Joseph and Sarah lived with the Ainsworths. Some details are known of Joseph's maritime career but there is more research to be done on this. In 1881 Joseph was master of the S & EA Charnley, a coasting vessel of 93 tons which on census night was at Phoenix Crescent Wharf, Frindsbury, Rochester. His elder brother William was mate and the two AB Seamen included his younger brother Henry and another Ulverston man John Winder. Wife Sarah was at home at 40 Vincent Street, Barrow, with her mother, another Sarah, brother and new baby daughter. Ten years later Joseph was at home in Barrow for the census at 23 Canal Street. Aged 36 he is described as a mariner, seas, aged 36 and, as in previous census returns, born in Liverpool. With him is Sarah, aged 31, and 6 of their children
