CROASDELL FAMILY - POTTED HISTORIES - BRANCHES
John Edward Croasdell and Mary Ann Richardson
John Edward Croasdell 1903 - 1975 was known as Ted or Teddy. He was born on 8th October 1903 and baptised at Haverthwaite, St Anne's on 1st November. He took over the Post Office, becoming postmaster following his father's death, after working in Yorkshire during the late 20s and early 30s.
According to the family Ted went to Ingleton looking for work and found a wife! On 10th October 1925 he married Mary Ann Richardson at Haverthwaite and they spent their first few years of married life in Ingleton. They had 7 children although two died shortly after birth and one at the age of 11. All were baptised at Haverthwaite.
Like his father, Teddy was also a member of the Leven Valley Brass Band in which he played cornet. During the war he served with the Royal Air Corps as a plane spotter from a lookout post at the top of Bigland Hill above the village - giving advance warning to the shipyard at Barrow-in-Furness of any imminent attack. Often these duties involved staying up all night after a full day at the Post Office. Later in life, in retirement, Ted and his wife moved to Ulverston.
Information on the children, grandchildren and further descendants has been restricted here although more may be added if the people concerned would like this. Thanks are due in particular to David and Ian Croasdell who have provided photographs and personal memories included in the text.
